Shell Study & Beachcombing Treasures
Enjoying the beauty and quiet of Mexico Beach, Florida with my family a few weeks ago was a much-needed break. Each morning, I would head down to the gulf to walk along the high tide wrack line and search for shells and unexpected treasures.
After gathering my beach finds, I began my “shell study”— spreading the day’s collection out and sorting by shape and color, then carefully identifying each one using field guides and online resources. In the heat of the afternoon, I retreated to the house to add to my Art/Nature journal. I sketched the intricate patterns of the shells and feather and recorded my observations, letting the memory of the morning’s discoveries linger as I added watercolor and notes to each page.

These reflective hours became one of the highlights of the trip, a chance to slow down and truly appreciate beauty in small details. Recording what we collected and observed brought a sense of connection to the natural world. Taking time to create art from nature can add an extra layer of meaning while bringing a sense of awe and calm. If you’re planning your own adventure, I highly recommend packing a journal and a few art supplies — you may be surprised by the treasures you’ll discover and the memories you’ll capture.
